How to Find a Children's Bicycle?

Children's Bicycle

Almost everyone has fond memories of getting their first bicycle and learning how to ride it. Here are some tips on how to choose a children's bicycle:

Step 1
Consider the size of the child. Age, weight, and height are the factors that will determine what size bike you should get for your child. For children 5 through 8, a 16 inch bicycle is recommended. For kids 6 to 9, an 18 inch bike. For kids 7 to 10, a 20 inch bike; and a 24 inch bike is recommended for pre-teens.

Step 2

Be sure to get a brand new bicycle. Older or used models can have parts or features that are defective or dangerous.
Step 3

Get a bike with the right brakes. Coaster brakes, which work by pedaling backwards, work best for younger children. Younger kids won't have the strength or length in their hands to operate hand brakes yet. For bigger or older kids, hand brakes should be the method of braking for their bicycle as it is safest.

Step 4

Consider the child's cycling ability. This will help you decide if you should get them a bicycle with lots of gears to change. More experienced riders will likely want a bike with different gears.
